Linus Pauling, Nobel prize of chemistry and La Paz in 1954 and 1963 respectively, introduced and coined a revolutionary concept of NUTRITION ORTOMOLECULAR known in the EE.UU for more than three decades.

The biochemical treatment deals the diseases with natural nutrients, not with natural medecines, substances that comprise of our organism, of the vital torrent that nourishes each organ, system and cell that conform our being.

The science of the nutrition to ortomolecular, teaches to us to restore the health of the patient fitting the diet and the nutrients to the “biochemical individuality” of each subject. Most important it is to prevent, to increase the innate natural defenses in each organism, and to restore the imbalance of the ill organism in order to reach a complete health.

“The well used” complexes ortomoleculares do not produce any negative effect, nor therapeutic dependency some, but they restore the alterations of the patient through a chemical re-balancing.

The importance of the diet in the relation to the optimal health has been documented through history. Hipócrates vió to the food as a primary medicine form for more than 2,500 years. Documents of old Egypt 5000 years A.C demonstrated the specific food use to treat several pathological conditions.

Antoine Laurent Lavoisier

True the scientific understanding of the diet did not arrive until the beginning of century XVIII, with the work of the French physicist Rene de Reaumur, who credits itself as driver of the initial investigation of digestive chemistry. More ahead, in than the same century, the work of Reaumur was continued by the Antoine Laurent Lavoisier chemistry, that, before being guillotined during the French revolution, studied how the metaboliza body the food to create energy.

James Lind

The first person who demonstrated to a direct relation between the disease and a deficiency of a specific food was James Lind, doctor of British navy in the war, that discovered that the sailors in long trips without the rations that contained the citruses they bled, had the rough skin, and hurt that took in curing, all the symptoms characteristic of the scurvy. In 1757, in one of the first controlled medical experiments, Lind demonstrated that when the sailors ingested the lemons and the oranges, the scurvy was prepared. As a result of its studies, captain James Cook did obligatory that each English sailor obtained rations of lemons and other citruses, allowing to sail around the scurvy world free. Today, well it is known that the scurvy is due to the deficiency of vitamin C.

Christiaan Eijkman

Christiaan Eijkman, Dutch doctor, is famous by its nutritional investigation. In 1893 it discovered that a rice diet refining causes beriberi, and could produce the experimental disease in birds. It discovered vitamin B.
In 1897, Christiaan Eijkman tried that a nutrient of brown rice was essential for the appropriate operation of the metabolism of the nervous system and the carbohydrate, and that a deficiency in that ingredient could cause to beriberi and other diseases. In 1929, their investigation took to him to receive the Nobel prize shared with Frederick Gowland Hopkins.

Max Gerson 1881-1959

“I know of a patient, who received the therapy of Gerson, to which they diagnosed that she suffered of terminal cancer and that would not survive another cycle of chemotherapy. Happy, seven years later, it is alive well and. We must more deeply investigate the beneficial nature of these treatments.”

- H.R.H. Charles, prince Gales

At the end of years 20, Max Gerson, began to observe that the cancer could be cured with the nutrition and the chemical decontamination. Charlotte Gerson (daughter of Gerson) writes: The “Dr. Gerson found that the underlying problems of all the patients of the cancer are toxicity and deficiency. One of the important characteristics of its therapy was the administration hourly of the juice of fresh vegetables. These contribute the necessary nutrients, as well as the liquids to help to rinse the kidneys. When the food high levels return to enter fine weaves, the accumulated toxins during many years are pushed the blood current. The toxins then are filtered towards outside by the liver. … The Dr. Gerson found that he could provide help to the liver by the caffein of the coffee, through enemas, the coffee is absorbed by the hemorrhoidal vein, that takes caffein until the liver. Caffein stimulates the liver and opens the biliary conduits to send toxics to the intestinal zone for its later excretion.” The therapy of Gerson is not specifically a treatment of the cancer, but a metabolic treatment, clean whereas it consolidates the capacity of the body to cure itself. The program is effective against an ample variety of severe diseases. The approach of the Dr. Gerson has been demonstrated, throughout more than seven decades, cash to enormously improve the quality and the time of life otherwise the ill one of the patients.

There is no better possible praise that this mention of the great Albert Schweitzer, M.D., awarded with Nobel: “I see in the Dr. Max Gerson one of the most eminent geniuses of the history of the medicine.”

Guillermo McCormick,
“Vitamin C is chemical and a specific bacterial toxin antagonist.”

It does about 50 years, the doctor Guillermo J. McCormick of Toronto, initiated studies on the idea that the low collagen formation must to the vitamin deficiency C, being the leading cause of the pathologies related to the cardiovascular disease and the cancer. This theory served so that Linus Pauling and Ewan Cameron began to use great doses of vitamin C to fight against the cancer.
About twenty years before Pauling, McCormick had already reviewed the nutritional causes of the heart disease and discovered that four of each five cases of coronary disease had vitamin deficiency C. McCormick also proposed the use of vitamin C as anti-virus and antibiotic. Some present authors often ignore the fact that McCormick defended the use of vitamin C to prevent and to cure the formation of some stones of the kidney from 1946. Already fifty years ago, McCormick “found, in the clinical investigation and of laboratory, that to smoke a cigarette the ascorbic acid neutralizes.

Albert von Szent-Györgyi, PhD

The Dr. Szent-Györgyi suggested this agent, who was also present in schools and oranges, outside the mysterious vitamin. Before 1933, it had isolated the substance in portions of the kilogram and he had named it the “ascorbic acid” that he means “the acid that prevents scurvy.” It marched to the United States in 1947 where it worked in, Marine Biological Laboratories AT Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Albert Szent-Györgyi, PhD, the 1937 Nobels by their discovery of vitamin C gained the prize. In fact, he was who named to the ascorbic acid vitamin and was first that predicted its use against the cancer. When Szent-Györgyi was in his I milk of death, at the age of 93 years, Linus Pauling flew to see him to take leave. Taking his hand, Linus told him: “you know, Albert, I thought whenever both we would work someday together.” Szent-Györgyi looking upwards told him humorous, “well, if not in this life, then perhaps in the following one.” Pauling died some years later, also in the age 93 years. They were two of the greatest thinkers of the twentieth century.

Roger J. Williams, Ph.D.

Another pioneer in the concept of the nutrition to ortomolecular era Roger Williams, professor of chemistry, discoverer of pantoténico acid (B5 vitamin), and founder and director of the biochemical institute of the foundation of Clayton in the university of Roofing tiles.

According to Williams, the following thesis formed the base of this new approach to the nutrition: “the micro nutritional atmosphere of our cells of body is crucial and important for our health, and the deficiencies in this constitute an important cause of the disease.”

Cornelius Moerman, Md

The best word to describe to the Dutch doctor, Cornelius Moerman, would be “firmness”. It more hard supported the opposition of its colleagues during all their professional life. Even today in the Netherlands, its name continues being symbolic, connected for always with the nutritional therapy, especially of the cancer. Before World War II, the Dr. Moerman published their opinion of which the cancer is not a local disease, but the tumor is the extreme stage of the deterioration of the whole body. The consolidation of the immune system, he shelp, it is the answer to this disease, and the nutrition plays the central role.

Moerman, that studied with doves, had observed that the healthy birds did not develop cancer, whereas they did it weak and the undernourished ones. It based on its own experiments with its doves, that the cancer was a degeneration of the metabolism, an iodine deficiency, citric acid, vitamin B, iron, sulfide, and of vitamins To, D, and C. A final appropriate diet with these substances, forms the base of the therapy of Moerman.

Their principles for the treatment of the cancer were revolutionary. In September of 1976, Moerman was invited by Linus Pauling to the conference of the international association of the winners and the friendly of the cancer in Los Angeles. As honor guest, Moerman received a concession by its valuable work with the cancer patients and by its original approach to the treatment of the cancer.

The continuous work of Cornelius Moerman alive today in the “Moermanvereniging,” an increasing Dutch association of the patients who plead for the nutritional therapy for the cancer.

Wilfrid Shute, M.D. Evan Shute, M.D.
1907-1982 1905-1978

In 1933. Wilfred and Evan Shute were of the first doctors in using great doses of the vitamin and to treat the heart disease. At that time, the free antioxidants and radicals were somewhat dark concepts in the chemistry of the oxidation, and was far from applications for the health and the disease. Also at that time, using vitamins to treat serious diseases such as the heart disease and diabetes, were considered by the mistaken medical body as in best of the cases and an absolute fraud in the worse one. The clinical results would speak for themselves.

Linus Pauling wrote: “The lack of recognition on the part of the medical institutions during last the forty years of the value of the vitamin and in the heart disease, is responsible for an enormous amount of unnecessary suffering and many early deaths. The effort to hide the discoveries of Shute on the vitamin and illustrates the framework of the medicine organized against the nutritional measures to reach one better health.
It does but of half a century, the Shute brothers and the colleagues good results in the prevention and treatment of the cardiovascular disease consigieron with lifted doses of natural vitamin and (even daily 800 majors of u.i).

Frederick Klenner, Md

“Vitamin C is the safest substance available for the doctor.”
Frederick Klenner-

the Dr. Klenner received his graduated doctor in Duke University in 1936.
Abram Hoffer writes: “In the beginnings of years 50, the Dr. Fredrick Klenner began their work with the megadosis of vitamin C. Used dose of up to 100 grams per oral and intravenous day. In clinical information it registered the excellent answer that registered with these doses. For example, the poliomyelitis patients to which vitamin C was provided to them did not undergo any side effect of their poliomyelitis. A study controlled in England with 70 children, in the middle of which provided to vitamin C and to the other half placebo to them, confirmed that no of deal with vitamin C developed any paralysis, whereas in the treated group a 20% did not do it. This study was not published because the vaccine of Salk finished being developed and nobody was interested in vitamins. The work of the Dr. Klenner was ignored.

The Dr. Klenner was the first doctor in emphasizing that the small amounts of vitamiana C are not effective. He shelp, “if you wish results, uses suitable vitamin C”. He published about twenty medical information as a result of seeing the constant treatments of a great variety of viral and bacterial diseases with the enormous doses of vitamin C.

Irwin Stone

The humanity can be thankful to Irwin Stone biochemist to introduce to Linus Pauling to vitamin C. Pauling had a first highly influential contact. When Irwin sent copies to him of some papers that he finished publishing, with the general title “Hypoascorbemia, a genetic disease”. The 3,000 milligrams by the day that it recommended are 50 times recommendations GDR. “My wife and I began to take that amount from vitamin… the severe colds that we had undergone several times to the year all my life did not return more. After some years I increased my dose of vitamin C to 100 times GDR; later 200 times, and finally 300 times the GDR (18,000 vitamin mgs C per day).

In order to support his thesis it presented two arguments that they impressed to him especially.
In the first place almost all the animal species, dogs, cats, cows, horses, elephants… have continued synthesizing vitamin C. Secondly made an impression to him that the animal make very great amounts of vitamin C. The made amount is approximately proportional to the corporal weight, and, turned to the weight of a human, they oscillate between 2,000 and 20,000 milligrams per day. Irwin concluded that the human beings with the habitual diet suffer of hypoascorbemia, a vitamin deficiency C in blood and fine weaves.

Carl C. Pfeiffer, M.D., Ph.D.

“For each drug that benefits patient, there is a natural substance that can reach the same effect.” - Law of Pfeiffer

Carl C. Pfeiffer made a rational division of the schizophrenias in three biochemical groups, and debated on the medicine amino acids. Carl Pfeiffer was one of the original members of the committee on the therapy of the American association of the schizophrenia.
“If there is a drug that can alter the biochemistry of the brain, there is a combination of the foods that can reach the same result without side effects,”. The Dr. Pfeiffer most of passed their life investigating the causes and the treatment of the mental disease. It discovered that the biochemical imbalances in the body were responsible for many psychological problems. Its study in more than 20,000 schizophrenic patients, allowed to divide the schizophrenia him in 3 biochemical groupings called histapenia, histadelia and pyroluric.

Linus Pauling, Ph.D.

“Linus Pauling was right.”   - Associate press

The Orthomolecular medicine describes the practice to prevent and to deal with disease contributing to the body optimal amounts substances that are to him natural. The winner twice of the Nobel prize, and the molecular biologist, Linus Pauling, acuñaó the term “Orthomolecular” in its article 1968 “Orthomolecular psychiatry” in daily “science”. Pauling described “Orthomolecular psychiatry” as the treatment of the mental disease by the disposition of the optimal molecular atmosphere for the mind, especially the optimal concentrations of the normally present substances in the body.

Orthomolecular is a term composed of ortho, for which she is Greek “corrects” or “straight” and the molecule that is the simplest structure that it exhibits the characteristics of a compound. It means therefore the “right molecule literally”.

Pauling widened their definition more ahead to include the medicine to orthomolecular, that he defined as “the preservation of the good health and the treatment of the disease, being varied the concentration in the human body of the substances that are normally present in”. Pauling thought firmly that the daily suplementación of vitamins in optimal amounts, in addition to following a healthy diet, was the most important measurement that any person could take to live a long life and heals, and following his own advice, he lived in total faculties until the 93 years.

According to Linus, the correct Vitamin administration C in the population would at least diminish in a 50% the incidence of diseases of any type, since its deficiency is the one that causes majors pathologies on the human organism.
These affirmations faced to him numerous medical estates of that one time in the United States, but they woke up the interest of many scientists. One of them was the surgeon Ewan Cameron, with whose collaboration the book published in 1979 “Cancer and Vitamin C” (Cancer and Vitamin C).

D, MPH, university of Albert Einstein of the medicine.

José Issels, Md

The roots of the Dr. José Issels were in the German tradition of “Naturheilverfahren” (practical natural). Due to its known professional abilities good, its kindness, and the relatively high index of survivors, many patients of the cancer in the final stage came to consult it. In 1951, a rich and thanked for patient funded his deprived clinic, the Ringbergklinik in Rottach-Egern (Bavaria) with 36 beds. The right work of Issels continued until 1960, when the “German Kriminalpolizei” before the instigation of its medical opponents arrested it. It had to close his clinic during years, in spite of a report of an independent scientist who had concluded that a high percentage of terminal patients of the cancer with the proven histological metastases, had survived by a considerably greater time of the awaited thing.

Issels thought that the cancer was the extreme stage, the last symptom, of a course of life in which an atmosphere had been created so that the tumor grows. Issels discussed that the conventional therapy finishes looking at the tumor without the recognition of this long equipped period of. To cut or to radiate a tumor does not suppress the cancer. In place, the Dr. Issels saw the body as having great potential to cure itself. The good nutrition and a clean atmosphere were central to their therapy. As the Dr. Max Gerson, he recognized the importance of the chemical decontamination.

Its inheritance is continued by the work of its wife, Ilsa and its son.

Guillermo Kaufman, M.D., Ph.D.

“I observed that the niacinamida one (or only combined with other vitamins) used during years, has not caused any adverse side effect in any patient.”

The Dr. Guillermo Kaufman was one of the first doctors in using therapeutic megadosis of the B3 vitamin (niacina, or niacinamida). It prescribed up to 5,000 niacinamida mgs of daily, in many divided doses, to drastically improve the problems common in arthritic patients. In his book 1949, Kaufman published the details of his treatment of arthritis with niacinamida, that also incorporated the use of vitamin C, thiamin, and riboflavin, all in great doses. It kept the files from patients who verified in several occasions the security and the effectiveness of the therapy of the megavitamina.

He does about 50 years, Kaufman described how the deficiency of a single food can cause diverse diseases, including which now knows as disorder hyperactivity and deficit attention. Charlotte Kaufman writes affectionately of its husband, “he was always ready to help another one. The medicine of its own way practiced, without consideration some towards whims. It listened his patients relamente”.

Emanuel Cheraskin, Md, DMD

The “man is a creature food-employee. If you do not feed it, he will die. If you feed it incorrectly, a part of him will die.”
- Emanuel Cheraskin

Emanuel Cheraskin, born in Philadelphia, received its medicine doctorate of the university of Cincinnati. The Dr. Cheraskin was of first in recognizing and demonstrating that the oral health indicates the health of whole body. It wrote on 700 scientific articles and she was author or coauthor of 17 text books, including bestseller “Psychodietetics: Food as the key to the emotional health.” Its two previous books, vitamin C: Who needs it? and the human health and the Homeostasis, were published when it had more than eighty years. The Dr. Abram Hoffer writes: “Emanuel Cheraskin was a great scientist and medical investigator. Their papers are models of productivity, brevity and scientific clarity.

David Horrobin, Md, PhD

David Horrobin was one of the more original scientific minds of its generation. Its study of the human physiology lead it to investigate the paper of fatty acids and their derivatives in human disease. It applied his extensive knowledge in lipids to investigate his therapeutic medicine potential. David was a scholar of the university of Balliol, Oxford, where she obtained the graduated doctor. To this he added a doctorate in neurology. After the additional investigation on EFAs in the universities of Newcastle and Montreal, one more and more specialized in biochemistry of the lipid and its apliación to the human disease.

Through his routes by Africa of the East and its work in Kenya, he developed the nucleus of the thought on fatty acids, the schizophrenia and its paper in the evolution. This idea in its book 2001, “the madness of Adam and the eve” elaborated more ahead, that was put in the list reduced in 2002 for the book of the science of Aventis of the year. Abram Hoffer wrote: “This is a remarkable book. I agree with its interpretation that the schizophrenia is an evolutionary advantage and that their genes are moving slowly in the population generally.”

David was the founder and the editor of medical hypotheses, a forum for the diffusion of new ideas in medicine. He was also founding and editor of the prostaglandins of the newspaper, the Leukotrienes, and essential fatty acids. He was a prolific writer who was author and corrected numerous books in an ample range of subjects, and contributed in some 800 scientific publications. He served as advisor and president as the association as doctors for the Great Britain association. Also he carried out services in the international foundation of the 1998-2003 schizophrenia.

Humphry Osmond, M.D.

Linus Pauling wrote: “In 1967, I read some documents published by two psychiatrists in Saskatchewan, Canada. The Dr. Abram Hoffer and the Dr. Humphry Osmond. (t). Its work was extraordinary”. They gave very great amounts of niacina to the schizophrenic patients, as much as 17,000 milligrams per day, that is 1,000 times the GDR. I was astonished that the niacina and vitamin C taking on a daily basis 1,000 times the recommended amount prevents the scurvy and the pellagra and do not have toxicity. This meant that these substances were absolutely different from drugs, that they occur generally to the patients in the amounts not much more small that the mortal dosages.

I thought that these substances, normally present in the body human, and required for good the health and life, deserved a name to distinguish them of ordinary pharmaceuticals, and I decided to call them the substances “to orthomolecular”.” (Linus Pauling in its own words: Selections of its writings, speeches and interviews, corrected by Barbara Marinacci. NY: Simon and Shuster, 1995.)

The remarkable medical race of the Dr. Humphry Osmond included decades of the psychiatric practice distinguished and a prodigious exit by means of the writing of the investigation. They extensively recognize it as pioneering investigator in the chemistry of the sense. Along with the Dr. Juan Smythies, Osmond developed the theory that the schizophrenics suffer due to the endogenous production of a hallucinogen based on the adrenalin. This lead to the hypothesis in the beginnings of years 50, the same origin of adrenocroma of Hoffer-Osmond of the medicine to orthomolecular. The popular press can remember today to Humphry Osmond to coin the term “psicoledia,” but the countless thousands of thanked for patients will remember it as the Co-discoverer of the therapy of the niacina for the schizophrenia.

Hugh Desaix Riordan, M.D.

“Hugh Riordan was a surprising influence in my family and on whom they knew him”.
- Julie Hilton, the Foundation of the Hilton Family

Of all the medical inconformistas, Hugh Riordan was one of the most understood. Hugh was a fighter who fought hard and constantly by the concepts of orthomolecular medicine. He was defied legally when he wanted to try to his patients with high doses of vitamins in the hospital and won. He was first to demonstrate how they are the therapies with high doses of vitamin C for cancer patients.

“We worked altogether on the writing meeting of the medicine magazine of Orthomolecular, and on the meeting of the foundation of Schizophrenia the International. Hugh became partner of the writing meeting of JOM in 1991, became attached publisher in 2000. He published some books, including three volumes of Disdentes Medical, and approximately 70 information of clinical investigations. Its main work concentrated in studies to treat cancer and the schizophrenic syndrome and with nontoxic vitamin C. Hugh was the head in securing a reasonable treatment for effective, safe, economic and very tolerable cancer. Few oncologists sometimes have seen these advantages, except which they visited the clinic of Hugh. The studies of quimitoreapia with intravenous vitamin C so well estableciddos by the Dr. Riordan, have been continued by the universities of Kansas and Montreal. In 2002, Hugh was honest by the international society for Ortonomolecular medicine with the prize to Doctor of Ortomolecular of the year. He worked untiringly, founding and developing the center for the improvement of being human. From this center he is continued at present with the work of his founder. (

Abram Hoffer, M.D (1917-2009), was a doctor internationally recognized, author, medical investigator and a pioneer in the food and vitamin use to treat the disease. The Dr. Hoffer has passed their last five decades directing the investigation related to the practice of the orthomolecular medicine, that emphasizes the use of nutrients in optimal doses for the treatment of the diseases. Their medical discoveries have been the subject of numerous books and hundreds of works of investigation.
In 1952 it and its colleagues began to develop a more effective treatment for the schizophrenia, that involved a biochemical hypothesis. They proved two nutrients: vitamin C and B3 vitamin. It was the first important systematic attempt in using great doses of vitamins therapeutic. In 1955 also it discovered that the niacina lowered the cholesterol levels.
The Dr. Hoffer I continue prescribing the regimes of ortomoleculares in patients in Victoria, Columbia Británica and Canada, was also the publishing Head of the medicine magazine of Ortomolecular.
